Disappointing as a successor to the S5200

I purchased the S1800 to be an upgrade from my S5200 with which I was very pleased. I wanted to obtain more than 5 megapixel capability. The wider angle and longer telephoto lens was also a plus. The lever action would be a reasonable alternative to the buttons for adjusting the focal length, but the action is so fast that adjustments are too great to properly use the lenses capabilities.
The lens performs well optically, but it does not have threads for a protective or other filter. More importantly, it has only two aperture settings. This reduces the camera to using variable image sensor sensitivity instead of f-stops: fixed ISO settings are impossible in Auto, SR Auto, Natural Light, Panorama, Movie (of course), and Shutter Priority modes. It also eliminates all but the most rudimentary ability to control depth of field.
The view finder suffers from chromatic aberration, though the problem does not appear in the final image. The diopter adjustment has been removed making the view finder making it difficult to use for those of us who wear glasses.
The shutter response is agonizingly slow rendering the camera unfit for candid shots, animals, sports, and many other types of photography. Unless the subject is fixed, getting the timing right is pure luck.
Unlike the S5200, the camera does not have a manual focus. This may be important to some, but I confess I almost never used the feature on the S5200.
Yes, image quality is excellent. If you want to take pictures of landscapes, architecture, and similar pictures, the camera is a good choice.
